Whooping Cranes - Necedah national wildlife refuge

A rare site in nature, this whooping crane couple is taking flight prior to the autumn migration of 2008. There are less than 400 whooping cranes living in wild today. With the efforts of the international crane foundation the whooping crane may someday rebound in numbers. During the late 1800's an estimated 1500 birds existed in the wild. An article in the local newspapers stated that black flies maybe driving the whooping crane from their nests abandoning their eggs before they hatch. Though the photo "Nearing dusk" is the type of photograph that I have taken on several occasions, I will try to build upon this scene when the weather warms up. This scene with moon light and lighting bugs is a photo that I've had in mind for a while. Hopefully this summers mood will be a match for the photo in mind.
